1-24-2009 KATIE STAM FROM INDIANA IS THE WINNER OF MISS AMERICA 2009
Miss Indiana Katie Stam has been crowned Miss America 2009 and will represent USA for Miss Universe this year.
The 22 year old communications major from University of Indianapolis also won Tuesday night’s swimsuit preliminary round in the 87th annual competition, hosted by Mario Lopez.
The Seymour native drew loud applause for her rendition of “Via Dolorosa” during the talent portion of the pageant at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip.)
Stam took home a $50,000 scholarship and will be embarking on a year of travel and public appearances. She hopes of becoming a television news anchor.
The first runner-up was Miss Georgia Chasity Hardman, who took home a $25,000 scholarship.
The 52 women competed in blue jeans, bikinis and gowns following a mini-reality series on pageant prep work and a week of preliminary competition.

MISS INDIANA
After winning the Miss Duneland local title Stam competed in the Miss Indiana pageant for the first time, in June 2008, although she had previously competed in a few less notable pageants. At the conclusion of the final competition was crowned Miss Indiana. For her state talent she performed "Art is Calling Me".
MISS AMERICA
Stam went on to represent Indiana in the Miss America 2009 pageant competition.
She along with the other 52 contestants participated in the TLC show Miss America: Countdown to the Crown, which was shown in the weeks prior to the pagent show. At the conclusion of the series, the American viewers voted for four of the contestants, including Stam, who would automatically advance to the top 15; the other 11 being voted by the pagent judges.
On the Tuesday night prior to the pagent Stam won a preliminary swimsuit award, becoming her state's first Preliminary Swimsuit award since 1994.
The pagent was broadcast live on TLC from the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on January 24, 2009. For her talent she sang "Via Dolorosa". At the conclusion of the live telecast, Stam was crowned the 84th Miss America. She succeeds Kirsten Haglund, of Farmington Hills, Michigan and is Indiana's first Miss America.
Her platform is "Passion for Service: Promoting Community Service and Involvement".

1-23-2009 Misses Vermont and New York win preliminary awards at Miss America 2009
1/23/09 - Winner to be crowned tomorrow in Las Vegas
Las Vegas, USA — Miss Vermont Ashley Wheeler was named Thursday night's preliminary Talent winner for her Vocal performance of "God Bless America," during the third night of competition of the 2009 Miss America Pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Ashley will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
Also in the spotlight was Miss New York Leigh-Taylor Smith, who was the preliminary Lifestyle and Fitness winner in a black Winnwear swimsuit. Leigh-Taylor will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The new Miss America will be crowned at the 2009 Miss America Pageant airing live on TLC, Saturday, January 24, at 8 p.m. EST and 7 p.m. Central. The 2009 Miss America Pageant will be tape delayed to air at 8 p.m. PST and 9 p.m. Mountain.

52 contestants from all 50 American states, the District of Columbia, and the American Virgin Islands, compete for the crown and scholarship money.
